CHAPTER 21

ARGUS

I stared at the deck of cards on my desk. Hastings must have put them there after tidying up the mess we left behind. Our glasses had been washed and placed neatly on the sideboard, and the end table where we’d played our game was straightened perpendicular with the edge of the carpet. Traces of the night before had been wiped clean, but they were far from gone in my mind.

Last night might have been normal for Vivian, but it wasn’t for me. Maybe she didn’t realize it, but people didn’t tend to sit around playing cards with me. They didn’t reveal embarrassing stories or trust me with their greatest fears. She’d worried I’d take advantage, and in any other instance, I would have. But the thought of using what she shared…hell, the thought of anyone else even knowing those private details about her made me edgy.

My gaze drifted from the deck of cards to the wall, where I could almost see her leaning up against it still. Her beautiful features flushed, lips swollen, and dark, glossy hair tousled around her shoulders. I almost missed all of that with my ridiculous suggestion for her to change her vision. What a mistake.

I scrubbed a hand over my face. These visions were something else. Life was a whole lot simpler when you didn’t know what was coming.

Hastings appeared in the door, and my first thought was that Vivian was finally awake. It was early afternoon, but I could eat. Would she want to have dinner again? Something casual, maybe in the conservatory?

“Good. I’m glad you’re here, Hastings. Have Fiona prepare—” I paused when I realized he was ushering Gregor into the office.

My informant stopped in front of my desk and waited until Hastings closed the door.

“You’re back. Did you find them?”

“Yes, boss. I located the merchants who sailed on the Black Eagle. They gave me the name of the buyer.”

“Who is it?” I asked, pushing out of my seat.

“Lord Bowen MacKenzie.”

I cursed and braced my fists on my desk. “You’re sure it’s him?”

“One hundred percent. The merchants delivered the blade themselves.”

This complicated things. I wasn’t surprised Bowen had gone after the blade. He was an ex-treasure hunter turned reclusive weapons collector who stored his vast collection in a desolate manor on the cliffs. Trouble was, the last time he and I crossed paths, things didn’t go his way. I conned him out of a weapon for his collection, and even before that, we always had a bit of a rivalry—until he all but vanished after a mysterious incident that ruined his face and earned him the nickname Bowen the Beast. Now, there were only rumors of his activities. Some said he took pleasure in torturing trespassers, locking them away in the catacombs beneath his house. Others claimed the scars on his face and body were forced upon him by his own blades, and he only went out at night, hunting those responsible.

Regardless of the rumors, if Bowen had the blade, I had to go after it.
